Correlation of side-scan backscatter intensity with grain-size distribution of shelf sediments, New Jersey margin

چکیده

The dependence of acoustic backscatter variations on sediment grain-size distribution is examined using a combined analysis of 95 kHz side-scan data and approx. 300 grab samples from the New Jersey margin. We show that, under well-controlled circumstances, an unprecedented degree of correlation can be obtained between backscatter intensity and mean grain size. However, backscatter is disproportionately a€ected by larger grain sizes. Addition of just a few extra weight percentage of the larger grain sizes (>4 mm), which in our study is typically represented by more abundant shell hash among the older sediments at greater water depths, can completely degrade this correlation.

Correlation of sidescan backscatter with grain size distribution of surficial seabed sediments

The dependence of acoustic backscatter on sediment grain size distribution is examined using dual frequency (100 and 410 kHz) sidescan sonar and 22 sediment grab samples from the Loch Linnhe artificial reef site on the west coast of Scotland. The sidescan data were processed to remove an empirically estimated average grazing angle dependence on backscatter. The processed data were analysed by f...

Model-based seafloor characterization employing multi-beam angular backscatter data--a comparative study with dual-frequency single beam.

Sediment geoacoustic inversion results are estimated employing a multi-beam (MB) echo-sounding system operable at 95 kHz. To characterize the western continental shelf of India (off Goa) seafloor, MB backscatter signals were acquired along with grab sediment samples. The substrate type and roughness of the site were estimated using the composite roughness scattering model with the measured back...

Determination of sediments diameter using acoustic waves

The use of acoustic waves in researches related to sea water is of most importance among scientists recently. Since these waves are the only waves, transmitted in water with lowest attenuation and high speed, they can be used in many scientific fields. The main goal of this research is to better understand the physics and mechanisms of sound-seabed interaction, including acoustic penetration, p...

The high-frequency backscattering angular response of gassy sediments: model/data comparison from the Eel River Margin, California.

A model for the high-frequency backscatter angular response of gassy sediments is proposed. For the interface backscatter contribution we adopted the model developed by Jackson et al. [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 79, 1410-1422 (1986)], but added modifications to accommodate gas bubbles. The model parameters that are affected by gas content are the density ratio, the sound speed ratio, and the loss para...

Measurement of In Situ Acoustic Properties for the ONR Geoclutter Program

The long-term objective of the GEOCLUTTER program is to understand the causes and implications of geologic clutter (reverberation) in a geologically well-characterized shallow-water environment. The original field area selected for the GEOCLUTTER program was the mid-outer continental shelf off New Jersey, USA. The New Jersey margin was chosen for the GEOCLUTTER study because the bathymetry and ...
